Simeón Building

  • Architect: Manuel Gómez Román
  • Built: 1907-1911
  • Address: Puerta del Sol, 6

The original purpose of the Simeón building was to house the business premises of "Viuda e Hijos de Simeón García" on the ground floor and dwellings on the upper floors with a side entrance.

There are three floors, the last of which is an attic floor. The ground floor, where the business premises is located, is spacious and splendid in style and is built of excellent granite stone masonry.

The main façade is eclectic in style and shows a French influence. It is arranged around a domed central section and the entrance to the shopping area is a beautiful doorway. It is the most decorative part of the building, especially the large curved balconies in the central section, with a semi-circular arch. The side facades are also eclectic in style with alternating window spaces.

Decorative features are made of granite and have a modernist air showing a variety of flora and fauna. They are found especially above the lintels, keystones, corbels, in details of the pilasters, balconies, and so on. Particular features worth noting are the woman’s face framed with leafy decoration on the keystone of the lower central section, the stonework on the pilasters where we can see doves and plant motifs, and the monstrous gargoyles.

One final interesting feature is the use of wrought iron, particularly in designing the curves of the balconies, reminiscent of Art Nouveau.
