Fraga Theatre and Cinema

  • Architect: Luis Gutiérrez Soto
  • Built: 1942
  • Address: C/ Uruguay, 3-5

This building is regionalist in style but decorative features from historical Galician architecture are also present. This is reflected in the upper gallery with its intertwined arches, which is an influence from the Façade of Treasure in Santiago Cathedral, or in the design and decoration of the windows on the balcony on calle Uruguay which are similar to those at the Hostal de los Reyes Católicos, also in Santiago de Compostela, and other Baroque features.

It was designed as a theatre and cinema with a total capacity of 1758, a dance hall, a tea room and rented office premises.

On the inside, the building is made of concrete with walls of locally-quarried granite. The better quality stone was reserved for decorative features.

One interesting feature is the great portico divided in rectangular shapes and decorated in a neo-Baroque style. It is located on the calle Uruguay façade and is the main entrance to the building.
