Albo Building

  • Architect: Francisco Castro e Pedro Alonso
  • Built: 1942
  • Address: C/ Gran Vía, 2

This is a ten-storey building used for office space and dwellings. Building commenced in 1942 but was not completed until seven years later in 1949. As a result, different architectural styles are reflected. There are features of Rationalism and Neo-Baroque Regionalism, seen in the upper balconies which have pinnacles, the divided pediments, volutes, and other features that do not appear in the original design. The main structure is reinforced concrete and the walls are made of granite.

The design is symmetrical to the central angle of the building. One original feature is the curve in the horizontal stone trim around the windows that merges to this angle. Another interesting feature is the way the corner is structured, round in shape on the ground floor but becoming right-angled on the floors above.

The building has a great monumental and vertical quality achieved by the volume of the steps and the sculpture by Jesús Picón, which is a copy of the Victoria de Samotracia.
