Salgueiro García Barbón Building

  • Architect: Romualdo de Madariaga
  • Built: 1934
  • Address: Puerta del Sol

This building was designed by architect Romualdo de Madariaga in 1934. It was commissioned by the sisters Elena and Práxedes Salgueiro García-Barbón. It is rationalist in style.

There are five floors. In the original design the ground floor was the premises of a bank with the office space and bank manager’s residence on the first floor. The next floor would contain more offices and the two final floors were residential.

The characteristics of the site made it quite difficult to design the building. As a result the corner section was rounded giving it a more expressionist style.

Features of interest are the false pilasters all throughout the building and which end in small steps. This seems to be an influence of Art Deco style, also seen in the tiled frieze that runs along the top of the building.

On the inside the building is made of concrete and the outside walls are of granite, partly uncut and tiled.
