Manuel Bárcena Franco's Houses

  • Architect: Jenaro de la Fuente Domínguez
  • Built: 1879
  • Address: C/ Policarpo Sanz, 24-26

Once the headquarters of the Caja de Ahorros de Vigo (Savings Bank) and of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Shipping in Vigo, and actually in this building there are Caixanova art exhibition halls.

The building was built of masonry stonework and is eclectic in style. It is made up of a ground floor and three upper floors and the original design has been conserved.

Two similar facades decorated with galleried balconies join at a corner. The facades are designed vertically with a prominent central section and two sides with a bolstered façade decorated in more detail. The central section of each façade is more classical in style and the outstanding features are the semi-circular arches, supported by pilasters and a triangular pediment in the central section of the third floor.

The building is crowned by a parapet with three arches perforated by elliptical circles and decorated with vases. The initials MB appear in the middle, after Manuel Bárcena the owner of the building.

In this building the main features of the eclectic style are reflected, for instance the way each storey is differentiated by varying the decoration and type of spacing. Decoration is mainly found in the upper parts, particularly the lintel and arches, where there are mouldings and false keystones creating a single decorative unit with elaborate corbels supporting the balconies. The outstanding features on the side sections of each façade are the keystones of the arches at the main entrance on Policarpo Sanz, where we can see a mask and the fine face of a woman.

To improve the layout inside and optimise space the columns and beams used are made of iron so the ground floor spaces could be used as more spacious bank facilities.
