Bonín Building

  • Architect: Jenaro de la Fuente Domínguez
  • Built: 1910
  • Address: C/ Arenal, 40-42

This is one of the most important works by this architect that is conserved intact in Vigo. The style is eclectic and it has a ground floor and three upper floors. The two facades are joined at a circular-shaped corner section which is highly decorated. Interesting decorative elements are the semi-circular arches held up by classical columns over the woodwork in the windows, each of which has its own balcony framed by moulded pilasters. On the second floor we can see freely-designed columns with the letters M and A intertwined. These are the initials of the owners, Manuel Rodríguez Rodríguez and Angelina Bonín.

The facades are arranged symmetrically with a tower-like central section and two side sections flanking the middle area, although only part of the façade on calle Oporto was built.

The building is decorated in highly-decorative Baroque style. There is hardly a space on the façade free of decoration.

As is characteristic of this style, each floor is differentiated by a change in the decorative elements. We can see false keystones, intricate designs on the rings of the arches, monstrous face masks, garlands, and so on.
