Old Offices of Vigo University

  • Architect: Manuel Uceda
  • Built: 1863
  • Address: C/ Oporto, 1

After several failed attempts the design for this building was finally approved on February 1st 1863. Its architect Manuel Uceda was a qualified master builder from the Academia de San Fernando in Madrid and was also an assistant to public works in the province.

The building as it now stands is the only one in the street which is aligned differently to the rest due to changes in the original plan for the street. It was originally used as a branch of the Bank of Spain.

The style of the building is eclectic classicism with a symmetric design and a somewhat rigid quality.

The main façade on Calle Arenal is made up of a central part lined by lateral pilasters and with a continuous balcony. The main decorative features are found in the central section which is composed of classical elements used sparingly by the architect. The structure of the side façade on Calle Oporto is in three floors with nine window openings on each. Design and ornamentation are similar to the main façade.
