Salesas Reales Visitation Monastery

  • Architect: Antonio Palacios
  • Built: 1942
  • Location: Teis

The monastery was designed in 1942 by architect Antonio Palacios. It is located in an area of Vigo called Calzada de Teis, near the street Sanjurjo Badía.

The building is regionalist in style with a certain medieval air and follows traditional Galician construction designs. It reflects the wide experience of the man who designed it, Antonio Palacios. His work includes important buildings such as the Votivo del Mar Church in the nearby town of Panjón and the Town Hall in Porriño, although this building is not as monumental in style.

The original design provided for a large hall surrounded by several blocks, and a monumental church that was blessed in 1945. However, in the end only the first block was built.

The building material was granite, which was used at times uncut and unpolished on the façade giving it a rather coarse appearance. This effect is heightened by the buttresses on the outside walls. Stonemasonry is only visible at the windows.
