Mülder Building

  • Architect: Manuel Gómez Román
  • Built: 1910
  • Address: C/ Montero Ríos, 22

This building was commissioned by Enrique Mülder Palmer and consists of a ground floor and three upper floors. It is one of the most representative modernist works by the architect Gómez Román, but also has Belgian, Viennese and eclectic influences.

The most interesting features are the corner section of the building which is curved in shape and ends in a dome and the façade on Montero Ríos, where there are two more prominent sections with curved features and a beautiful continuous balcony along the first floor. A large three-centred arch spans the façade and is supported by three pillars flanking the wide window on the ground floor. The whole façade is built in stonemasonry.

Decorative features are always secondary to the architectural design or present in geometric shapes. They appear mainly in the false keystones in the window arches and under the balconies. As regards building materials, it is worth noting the use of tiles on the facades. In particular, under the balcony on the first floor we can see mythological creatures framed by blue oval shapes and surrounded by garlands. The dome is also covered in small copper-coloured tiles.
