Post and Telegraphs Building

  • Architect: Manuel Gómez Román
  • Built: 1920-1928
  • Address: Plaza de Compostela

The style of the building is eclectic and stoutly classicist. An interesting feature is the symmetry of the two similar side facades, linked at the corner by a higher section. The architect Manuel Gómez Román used a classical design on the facades and the base is perforated with openings that give light to the basement, huge pilasters and a platform on the top floor that acts as an entablement.

The central section of the building is interesting as the windows are framed by pilasters and flat granite mouldings in neo-Baroque style.

On the top floor, however, the original design was changed. When the building was remodelled, the walls were painted ochre-coloured.

The most interesting feature in the corner section is the main entrance. Here there is a large windowed area which adds light to the main hall and the spaces above.

The Post and Telegraphs Office opened in the building on the 1st of March 1930 and remains there to this day.
