Old Bank of Spain (now Casa das Artes gallery)

  • Architect: Romualdo de Madariaga
  • Built: 1938
  • Address: C/ Policarpo Sanz, 15

These new premises for the Banco de España were to replace the previous location at calle Oporto (the old University offices building).

The final design by Romualdo de Madariaga was approved in 1938 and there are some changes from a previous design. The neo-Baroque style of the main entrance was changed and other decorative features were rejected in order to give the building a new image of austerity and sobriety.

Interesting aspects are the main entrance which is decorated with two human figures situated on the side pilasters at the corner. Inside, the spacious central hall receives light through a stained-glass window and the offices are arranged in a circle around the hall.
