La Guía Hermitage

  • ARCHITECT: Manuel Gómez Román
  • BUILT: 1951
  • ADDRESS: Monte de la Guía. Parroquia de Teis

This hermitage or chapel is dedicated to Our Lady of the Guide and the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The architect Manuel Gómez Román commissioned with building the new church as the previous building was in a poor state of repair.

The main point of reference in the church is its central steeple. It had originally been designed to be much bigger and at the top there was an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. However, due to the order’s financial situation it had to be altered.

The chapel is rectangular in shape with a polygonal apse, which is raised on a platform surrounded by a sturdy stone wall. Stone is also used on the outside walls while for some of the panels and columns stone was combined with stonemasonry and bright spaces.

The cornice on the main façade is divided by an original arrangement of panels. An interesting feature at the main entrance is that the pediment is divided at the centre by a scallop shell.
