This is a most interesting example of Galician Neo-classical architecture.
Originally another church with a graveyard stood on this site. However, as it fell into disrepair and due to the fact that new legislation encouraged cemeteries to be built outside the city, it was decided to build a new church.
The image of the Cristo de la Victoria which represents the city is kept here and is the object of great devotion.
The building is shaped like a basilica in three sections. The central nave is higher than the side aisles which are narrower and receive less light. Twelve Doric columns separate each aisle part and each column has its own entablature with ornamental panels of triglyphs and metopes.
The main façade is simply decorated with a clear and symmetrical design. At the end of the central nave there is a large cornice decorated with mutules or rectangular blocks, and with a triangular pediment at the top. At the top of the side aisles there are two twin towers, more baroque in style than the rest of the building.
On the right façade it is interesting to see the sundial which was placed there in 1837 and designed by sculptor Juan Agustín Domínguez. This one is unusual in that it does not face south as is the norm. These are also known as declining dials.
