Carmen Church

  • ARCHITECT: Antonio Cominges
  • BUILT: 1957
  • ADDRESS: Paseo Padre Lorenzo, 2

The land where this church was built was donated by Doña Paula Gómez Curieses between 1936 and 1939. The first stone was laid on March 18 1951.

The most interesting features are the stained glass windows inside the church which were designed by the Belga firm. The side window showed the image of the Virgin of Consolation, which was destroyed by a storm. On the altar we can see the Virgin of Carmen giving a scapular to Saint Simon while the other shows the Virgin of Carmen with those drowned at sea. In 1983 it was proposed to add two new stained windows to commemorate the golden jubilee of the Carmelite order in Vigo. One window was for the Carmelite saints Teresa and John of the Cross and Saint Joseph and the other for Saint Anthony and Saint Teresita.

On the steeple on the main façade there is an image of the Virgin Mary carved in stone. It was sculpted by Raúl Comesaña from Vigo and weighs approximately 25 tonnes and is 7 metres high. Work on the steeple to hold the image of the Virgin began in 1962.
