There are plenty of green areas in the city, small gardens and big parks, truly inviting places for leisurely walks in contact with nature.
Some of the most well-known gardens of the city are: Elduayen Gardens, a newly restored site, next to the Avenues area and the main access to the Royal Nautic Club facilities; Compostela Square Gardens, located in a fashionable residential area; O Castro Hill, a wonderful viewpoint over the Ría of Vigo, with a great variety of trees and plants.
The municipal park “Quiñones de León”, the biggest in town, is a beautiful city park bounded to the south by the Lagares river, with a small lagoon, a Greco-Roman theater, and four romantic gardens surrounding an impressive Manor House withing the parkland.
Other parks within the municipality are: La Guía, Riouxa, Camilo Jose Cela, A Bouza, and a newly conditioned pedestrian walk along the Lagares river bank.
Occupying an area of 68 ha, several Forest Parks are distributed along the hills surrounding the city. As leisure places to enjoy nature, they offer a wide range of amenities, from house bars and grills to fountains and viewpointws over the bay.
Special mention is deserved to the large number of children's playgrounds throughout the town, with games adapted to modern standards.
Parks and Gardens
Vigo has many urban parks and gardens. The most popular ones because of their history or size are: Alameda Gardens, located in Compostela Square; O Castro Hill and Castrelos Park in the very city center, and La Guía Park located in the popular district of Teis.
Forest Parks
Close to the Vigo city centre, the Forest Parks occupy an area of 705.460 square metres. Most of the woods are around the nearby hills within the municipality; some are on community land and, thanks to the collective effort, the natural ecosystem is preserved over large spans of time (which has withstand the test of time)
In many of these woods and forests there are large fence-enclosed recreational areas with plenty of facilities, which enable people to enjoy nature and to halt woodland degradation. There is a total number of twelve forest parks surrounding the municipality, offering the most spectacular viewpoints over a wide area of dozens of square Kilometres.
All the Forest Parks are interconected by the GR53 hiking trails, allowing people to experience nature, adventure, sport and leisure at he same time, without leaving the municipality.
The implementation of the reforestation program using native tree species such as oaks and birches is intended to continue, in order to ensure the survival of the native vegetation. The main purpose is to improve the visual impact and enhance our rural landscape, as well as to create a more pleasant atmosphere and to provide useful shade in the summer for visitors to feel confortable.
