The Town Planning Department was established in 1996 as an autonomous administrative body with legal public personality and own heritage , subject to the supervision, monitoring and control of the Council of Vigo.

Its competence include, among others, the elaboration of plans for urban development projects, the planning of urban action, expropriations, information and approval, where appropriate, of the files handled by private initiative, the implementation of programs, urban planning functions, the registration of transfers of urban benefits and management of municipal wealth land.
