According to the Mayor's Office Resolution of 5 July 2007, this Department is responsible for the following functions:

• The conservation, preservation, restoration, dissemination and promotion of the Cultural Heritage of Vigo.
• To take, in case of emergency, the necessary precautionary measures to safeguard the Cultural Heritage at risk from neglect and decay or damaged.
• To promote an external dissemination strategy, conducting cultural exchange programs when deemed appropriate, and setting up agreements to this end in cooperation with the Autonomous Administration.
• To urge the Autonomous Administration to prepare nomination files for the evaluation, designation and inscription of the selected sites on the Galician Cultural Heritage List or their inclusion in its General Inventory.
• To take the suitable measures to ensure the preservation and conservation of the most valuable assets that constitute the Cultural Heritage Inventory of Vigo.
• Maintenance and upkeep of the Castrelos Municipal Museum, with special regard to the archaeological collection management..
• To encourage all public administrations to consider contributing to promote qualitative research, documentation, preservation, recovering, restoration and dissemination of the Cutural Heritage assets of Vigo.
• To report to the Autonomous Administration any action or omission constituting a breach of statutory duty, according to current Law on Cultural Heritage of Galicia.
• To act as an authorized representative on behalf of the City Council in the following entitites and institucions: Board of directors of the Liste Foundation - Ethnographic Museum (Deputy Chairmanship); Board of directors of the Castrelos Municipal Museum (Chairmanship).
• To carry out all necessary formalities and procedures to accomplish with the research project on the roman site of Toralla according to the Agreement with the University of Vigo, and to provide for permits, monitoring works and activities associated with this public archaelogical museum project.
• To manage and coordinate the current excavation works in O Castro Park considering its great patrimonial richness, in order to preserve and publicize the local archaeological heritage.
