The Quiñónes de León City Museum opened in 1937 and since then has been the city’s most symbolic museum. The building is a fine example of a "pazo" - a typical mansion house built by the Galician aristocracy during the 17th century. It was remodelled at the end of the 19th century.
The museum exhibits decorative objets d’art from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries – furniture, pottery, china, miniatures, silverware, clocks, and cloth, glass and crystal items, mainly either donated from Mr. Policarpo Sanz’s legacy or acquired.
In total there are 29 permanent exhibition rooms, a library, and museum guides and a variety of publications about archaeology are available. The French and English-style gardens around the house are also a pleasure to visit.
The ground floor is conserved as the original residence of the Marquis de Quinóñes who donated the house. There is a permanent exhibition of 17th and 18th century European paintings some of which came from the legacy of Mr. Policarpo Sanz and others from the Prado Museum and the former National Modern Art Museum.
The highlight of the museum is its collection of twentieth century Galician art, considered the best collection of its kind. The first and second floors are dedicated to contemporary art: the Regionalist Movement, the Renovation of the 1930s and the move of Galician art towards contemporary trends in the second half of the twentieth century.
There are two rooms in the archaeology section in the annex building of the house. This collection includes items found in Vigo and the surrounding area from the Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages.
