Civil Protection services are delivered through the Local Authorities. The Civil Protection Unit is devoted to the study and prevention of serious situations of collective risk, extraordinary disaster or public calamity, in order to safeguard people's life and physical integrity, as well as to guarantee the preservation of the property and the environment.

This all-volunteer nonprofit organization consist of the following members:

  • Volunteers: people firmly committed, ready to provide the basic minimum services scheduled every weekend.
  • Cooperators: on-call people ready to help in extreme cases of staff shortage or emergency management of mass gatherings.

Depending on the area of performance, there are various emergency working groups, both at land and at sea, and an aditional vocational training service. The latter is caried out by an independent unit, working closely with the two former ones.

  • The land forces consist of:
    • Volunteer Squads: A workforce made up of highly skilled and properly equiped people capable of conducting risk assessment, emergency planning and response, in case of receiving any 112 emergency call.
    • Bikes: Supervisory staff at beaches, bycicle racing and events, parades, ..
    • First Aid Team: An organized group of people attending periodic training in order to keep their skills current.
  • The sea forces work daily during the summer from June to September. On weekdays they go out in a patrol-boat – two boats on weekends and holidays – with a skipper, a lifeguard and a crewman. This unit also provides services at boat races and regattas, fishing competitions and tournaments...
  • The training is both internal (in our premises) and external (Academia Galega de Seguridade Pública). All the volunteers must undergo specific training.

The basic functions to be performed are:

  • Prevention: risk assessment.
  • Mitigation: measures to avoid or mitigate risks.
  • Preparedness: key objectives and action plans.
  • Response: actions to protect people and property.
  • Recovery: measures to take after the event.
