Analysis: Analysis of tap water, drinking fountains, municipal swimming pools, water supply system, seawater quality, Lagares river, sewage waters and others.

• Drinking fountains and spring waters: The Municipal Laboratoy performs usually three or four times a year, a rigourous testing of the waters provided by the aproximately 350 dinking fountains registered within the municipality. Actually, it seems to be the only spanish lab which analizes waters from such a large amount of fountains.
• Seawater quality: Seawater quality testing is the main criteria for beaches to be eligible for the European Blue Flag award, a major asset to the economic and touristic industry in our city. During the summer season, the municipal lab analyzes water samples weekly, collected from the 24 bathing areas authorized by the Health Department of the Xunta de Galicia. In each of these 24 beaches, an information panel displays the results of the latest analisys, as well as a record of previous valuations and the criteria for establishing bathing water quality standards.

Pests and Pest Control: Disinfection, disinfestation and rodents control procedures are carried out by the Pests Control Unit.

Environmental control:

• Surveillance and control of certain environmental factors that may affect health.
• Assignment of licenses for chemical spills into the sewerage system; analysis of rainfall and storm waters, etc.

Sanitary inspections:

• Sanitary inspections in establishments:
  • To report: Opening licenses.
  • To resolve: Citizens complaints.

Collaboration with the OMIC (Municipal Consumer Information Office): Information and assistance on Food Hygiene matters in collaboration with the OMIC.

Education:

• Collaboration in professional training programs; tutorized laboratory practice programs.
• Guided tours to the Laboratory: the collection of scientific * equipment of the Vigo Municipal Laboratory, illustrates faithfully its evolution and activity during the twentieth century. The permanent exhibition is on display at the laboratory entrance hall.
• Collaboration with Schools and the University of Vigo.
