The municipality of Vigo, provides the main framework for sports associations within the Galician, region and gives support to more than 25 sport federations that comprise over 300 sporting clubs.

The Department of Sports is responsible for providing public infrastructures to the city, organizing big sporting events and giving financial support to the clubs, in collaboration with the Municipal Institute for Sports (Instituto Municipal de Deportes -IMD), an autonomous body that is responsible for implementing and monitoring all the municipal sport programmes.

During the 2001-2002 term, the IMD launched, among others, a school programme called "More than sport" to promote sports among children. It also organizes sport training activities, games, recreational competitions , and also sports activities for disabled people.

Nautical tourism

Vigo has about 23 kilometers of coastline, including more than seven km. of wonderful fine sandy beaches. There is also a big area occupied by the seaport facilities, which consits of several shipyards, wharfs, fish auction halls, moorings and terminals for fishing boats, and other large vessels. The Royal Nautic Club, and the always busy Cruise terminal, are located right in the heart of the city centre.

The port of Vigo is considered one of the most well known fishing ports in Europe, and even worldwide. It has a big fish distribution centre - it supplies both fresh and frozen fish - with capacity for a large number of coastal fishing boats and others large distant water fishing vessels. Every day, a great amount of catches are unloaded at the auction halls, to be delivered afterwards to market within Spain, throughout Europe, and all over the world.

Furthermore, over the last decades the port of Vigo has experienced a tremendous increase in cruise arrivals. All the year round, the city welcomes thousands of passengers, arriving on board of some of the most luxury cruise ships in the world, such as the Queen Mary II, the Queen Elisabeth, the Oriana, and many others.

It is also remarkable the wide range of sports and leisure facilities offered by the various marinas located along the Vigo bay and in the so-called O Vao Outdoor Centre.
