Vigo Bay

The city of Vigo, which is the most densely populated city in Galicia, is situated in one of the most beautiful corners of the whole Iberian Peninsula - the bay which takes its name.

The south coast of Galicia is characterised by a series of bays and inlets known as the Rías Baixas and Vigo Bay is the southernmost and longest (approx. 33km) of these. It is in the province of Pontevedra and as well as the city of Vigo, along the shores of the bay we find other towns such as Redondela, Arcade, Moaña and Cangas do Morrazo. The town of Baiona is also located at a small inlet but often considered outside the bay.

The entrance to the bay between two capes - Cabo Home to the north and Cabo Silleiro to the south - is 15km wide. It continues to narrow and in the middle can be divided into three main parts:

  • From Balea Point to Muiño Point is the part of the bay which is most open to the sea. It is, however, sheltered by the Cíes Islands. This makes for an excellent natural port with prime conditions due to its depth and manoeuvrability.
  • The middle part of the Bay reaches the strait of Rande, where the distance from shore to shore is only 700m.
  • The "eastern" part made up of the cove of San Simón, is about 10km from north to south. The cove is overlooked by the Island of San Simón, although this is really two islands (San Simón and San Antonio) joined by a bridge. Over the centuries this island has been used for different purposes. There has been a monastery, a leper colony, a prison, and an orphanage. Restoration work completed in 2005 has now restored the buildings for public use.

When sailing on the bay, the main point on the horizon is the Cíes Islands -San Martiño, the hills of Monte Faro and Monte Agudo- and the sunsets are beautiful. The Cíes Islands are part of the National Park of Atlantic Islands in Galicia (with the islands of Ons, Sálvora and Cortegada).

Vigo Bay is excellent for sailing and the coast, the landscape and the peace and quiet to be found here makes it an ideal location for leisure, and of course for all types of water sports.

Rande Bridge

Rande Bridge was designed by the Italian engineer Fabrizio de Miranda and built in 1978. It is a four-lane metal deck suspended bridge with a total length of 1,558m, and joins both sides of the strait of Rande. It is part of the motorway from Vigo to A Coruña (Autopista del Atlántico) and is at a height of 45 metres above sea level. The span between its central piers measures 400m in length and the height is 148m. It was officially opened in 1981 and was considered one of the most modern and innovative works of engineering of its kind.
